Travel Future-target audiences

There is a group in China who was born between late 50’s and 60’s and is approximately 45-50 now. They are different from the generation Y in western world. During childhood and adolescence, they had experienced a hard lifetime and were raised up and educated in traditional Chinese background. When they became youth, it was the time when China started the policy of reform and opening. Due to this policy, this group becomes the first group influenced by and accepts western capitalist culture. It is both culture and economic shock to them. After decades fighting, some succeed 60’s stand out become the pillar of Chinese society. These people are high educated, successful, wealthy and with taste of design product. Even though they have high consumption level, they are economizing than generation X relatively. The aim of their travel is usually for business, they will not stay at the destination longer to visit scenic spots after work. Sometimes they will drive to suburb with natural scenery to spend leisure time. Their taste of product Prefer simple, elegant, fluent design. Appreciating the design has the combination with western and Chinese element. They will not follow the fashion and hope the product could be used for long time and will not out of date. They hope the products could show their taste of life. That could be high-level living level and a person is believed in arts and Chinese culture. They will choose products used comfort rather than fashion design. Having special preference to natural or environmental materials such as bamboo fiber and signature cotton. They will keep working but hope to change their busy life and live in a slow speed. They seek to have the feel of Zen in their life and most of them believe in Buddhism.

Project 3

Rationale For this project, I choose the crown park locates in city Toyota in Waterloo. This park is surrounded with new apartment buildings. It is a modern apartment zone. Most of the residents are young and middle-aged couples and students. Crown Park is one of the great community spaces that include: grass lawns, seating areas, water features. Residents can also walk their dogs there, as Crown Park is an off-leash area at all times. After the field research, it was found that there is many people let their dogs play in this park. One problem is almost of the dogs' owners standing in the middle of the grass area in order to keep an eye on their pets. All the chairs locate at the edges of the park and no pet owner would use these. Since the sense of this place is a good and playful area for dogs and their owners. I think it is better to have one kind of furniture to make this place be more playful and more practical for both pets and owners. I hope this furniture can provide seating place for owners in the middle of the field and create some activities for pets. In my design, by using the combination of benches, the owners can sit down to have a talk with each other at the same time they can observe their pets in any directions. The different levels of benches allow residents can use these as chairs or tables. So it also allows families to have a picnic or other activities require tables. Moreover, owners can use these different levels of benches to treat or play with their pets. For the components, each component has standard dimension and the size of the furniture is changeable because each component could be combined together. On another hand, the benches would be made of wood like the typical style of sfa products. And the support and legs would be steel.

However, almost of the dogs' owners standing in the middle of the grass area in order to keep an eye on their pets. All the chairs locate at the edges of the park and no pet owners would use these. As the sense of this place is a good and playful area for dogs and their owners. I think it is better to have a modern furniture to make this place be more playful and more practical for both pets and owners. I hope this furniture can provide seating place for owners in the middle of the field and create some activities for pets. As shown below, there are three general plans. By using this combination of benches, the owners can sit down to have a talk with each other at the same time they can observe their pets in any directions. The different levels of benches allow residents can use these as chairs or tables. So it also allows families to have a picnic or other activities require tables. video reflection3

Who killed the electric car talks about the birth and death of the electric car and the roller coaster ride it took during the decade long life span. The reason why birth of the electric car began in California at 1996, why did people choose the electric car is it was quieter and smoother, The creation of gas cars was brought to life, it was able to be mass manufactured, faster and cheaper compared to electricity at the time. The video starts with an introduction on how electric cars came to be and the problems associated with those of gas cars. The main problem being smog; which caused many people to have lung legions and was a public health crisis to those who had asthma. There were also rising concerns in the amount of carbon dioxide that was being emitted into the atmosphere. Although the planned obsolescence is positive on the other hand, because the production of new products to satisfy the consumers, means that we create employment, business makes profits, it pays taxes and strengthens our economy. I believe industrial designers should watch this video to understand the pro's and con's of planned obsolescence, so that they are more considerate when designing, Mount Franklin easy crush water bottles, is planned obsolescence but the product is made of a material that is easily recycled meaning more positives associated with obsolescence. At last, the video was an interesting watch, and provided inside to the history of motor vehicles. It shows us that designs today have evolved over the years, and as designers, we should be aware of the changes involved. It was not a one –step simple process, but rather a trial and error of consumer wants and needs to determine how to go forth with an idea. Or in this case, go forth with the death of an idea.

video reflection 2

How its made.
This video outlines the complexity and the extensiveness of recycling and considers every aspect of the waste material when being recycled.
Recycling Paper about 60% in use recycled material which is first sorted into different paper qualities, dissolved and pluper, the pluper then sorts out the impurities and print ink are removed.
Aluminum always recyclable and never deteriorates. Aluminum must be washed over 6 times and high temperatures. Inside the cans they must be protected from the acid in carbonated drinks
Packaging tubes are made out of aluminium due to they are lightweight, affordable and malleable. The slugs are channelled into a forming press where impact intrusion shapes the slug into a tube. The tubes are then aligned and threaded using rollers. The tubes are then lacquered to protects the contents that will be put inside. The tubes are then painted using enamel paint and printed using polyester ink. They are then sent to their respective clients to be filled with contents.
Recycling glass are sent to plants for a secondary sort out into different glass recycling streams. Fragments which are smaller than 15mm are able to be sorted out into different groups even ceramic. The prepare fragments are melted by soda, lime and sand before being shaped to be reprocessed into bottles again. Approx 2.7 million tones are recycled each year.
Packaging tubes , Aluminium is used because it is affordable lightweight and malleable. It also impact extrusion on the slugs, protect coat between the metal and contents. Ink takes 7minutes to dry and worth12c each

Giving packaging a new life
These videos show how packaging is made and also how they are recycled. It a good way for industrial designers to know so they are aware of what the manufacturing and recycling processes entail.
Paper recycling:before recycling paper must be sorted, resolved and pulped in the pulper machine. Impurities and inks are removed. To creat new paper more roar materials are added depending on the desired paper type being created. The paper is then drained and dried. Most products that include a high percentage of recycled paper are newspapers, toilet paper and cardboard for packaging.
Aluminium products such as foil, lids and cans are considered as scrap, which is then sorted from waste streams. The aluminium is then re-heated and casted to produce rolls of sheets which can be used for other needs such as packaging or labelling, this is then sent out to different companies to be used for various products. Any waste that is created then goes back in the production cycle, minimising wastage and maximising energy efficiency. Recycling Tinplate in cans are sent to recycle factories where through magnets the tin cans are transported by machinery and compressed into metal blocks. Steel scraps produces about 40% usage of steel used in Germany( 15 000 steel slabs) , equally able to reproduce 9 billion new cans.
Choice of material is important as their recyclability has to be considered and some are harder to process than others. The structure of these wastes is also explored, showing what the material ends up like before it is reused. It also briefly describes the changing in trends eg. The growing popularity of plastic bottles and jars.
As designers, being eco-friendly and educated about the environment is necessary to be able to design with these factors in mind. Our designs should reflect upon the environment and help to conserve the environment and best reduce waste disposal. The content of the video is beneficial for designers to become aware of existing issues and on how to utilise resources.

Rationale

This concept is a rainwater collector and storage which inspired by heliconia flower. These flowers are produced on long, erect or drooping panicles, and consist of brightly colored waxy bracts, with small true flowers peeping out from the bracts. Heliconia is very drought intolerant, so its structure and form help it to collect more water. For the bracts, they grow one opposite to another so they can collector water in different directions while the long erect shape is particular helpful too. For this design, it copies the structure and form from heliconia flower. There is a main watering can which holds a few flower shape parts that help to collect water and can store a few water as well. For these parts, they can insert into each other. So users can decide how many parts they need and how to assemble them. Also they can be collected one in one in order to save space when not being used. This collector can be in different sizes. For apartment, it can be located at the corner of the balcony while for house, there could be a few in the garden. AS users can decide how many parts they want to put on the can, so it is flexible to decide how much water we want to store. For the material being used, it is decided to be recycled plastic because it is easy in contour machining and the plastic can be recycled used. For now, it is necessary for everyone to save water due to the environment situation. This rainwater collector help users to collect rainwater and we can use the water for gardening or other activities which do not required drinkable water.
