week 4

Tutor feedback, the mechanism is not that work, I need to make it more clear for audience. the outside shell should have one part to prevent pressing the button by accident. It is better to make the package in one piece not a refill package. Peer comment: The shape is ergonomic. It is better to make the shape more suitable for Aristic patients. Next week ,I will modify the shape and make clear mechanism explaination.

LCA LIFECYCLE ANALYSIS

Greenfly: Design greener products It is a solution that designs approach the whole system of the product, and address the lifecycle of the product. Recycling can reduce the solid waste. Transport and manufacture might result lots of waste. The chart helps people to better understand the negative impact, which the product contributes to the worlds designers, it makes us more conscious and think about our designs and their effects on the environment. In conclusion, there are in fact a lot of factors that could contribute towards the environment, wastage of materials and energy. It is important to research on the lifecycle stages of a product such as manufacture, transport, use and end of life. Autodesk: Whole system and lifecycle thinking The video talks about the information of product lifetime. Better design is recyclable. For the chosen of the material, it should be recycled everywhere and less material used. Giving more possible options for after life use and reusable. Not just think about ways we could improve a design but rather take a good look at what the actual problems are about the design. Consider other things in the whole product life cycle through the eyes of designers, manufacturers and marketers. Keep looking back on the product lifecycle draw up in the initial stages of the design. Define the problem by looking at the whole system. Brainstorm solutions by looking at the whole system. Autodesk: Improving product lifetime Design for durability. Design for repair and upgrade. Design for disassembly and recycling. The video is a great learning about the scarcity of our earth and it serves a well reminder to designers, manufacturers, business and consumers.. It is a nice thing to think if a concept can be achieved when a product can be manufactured beautifully again, without the need of any more resources and there could be no more landfills. Autodesk: Lightweighting Due to use of less material in manufacturing, and obviously this would be good for sustaining resources, less negative impact from production to disposal, and lower costs. There are strategies to reduce material usage, the maximizing the strength of the material/product. Lightweight principle should not be used if it becomes liable to users, and/or prove harmful. Certainly making lightweight solution for a product is beneficial to also transportation of these goods, and will benefit consumers, especially to users who have disability conditions, e.g. arthritis and muscle/nerve tremors. It may be beneficial to consumers because of lower purchase cost, increase portability for handheld products and improve performance and efficiency for heavy duty and capital goods. Lightweight is a definite good sustainable strategy and should be noted by designers. Autodesk: Green materials selection A good material is abundant and non-toxic. A good material doesn’t require heaps of energy to be obtained, refined and put into manufacture. A good material is a material that has good end of life options and that doesn’t cost a lot. It is encouraged to use green materials if it meets the trusted regulations and the harvesting of the plants is certified and sustainable. It is also important to consider the cost and the level of technology used to manufacture green materials, especially the newly founded ones. A qualified green material should also provide excellent physical properties like other commonly used materials, can be recycled easily and economically. Autodesk: Energy efficient design Understanding the use of energy, the origin and the loss. Sustainable design using efficient energy saves time, cost, material, and the product will reap higher performance. It is important to understand the transformation of energy and the level of energy used in order to be converted into another form of energy. Amount of energy used should be known during extraction of materials and during manufacturing processes. Engineers and designers should work together to think of how to reduce power consumption and conserve energy during operation of product and when it is not in use. Product companies should also encourage and advise their consumers how to practice a good habit to save and conserve energy while using their products.

Week 3

Comment: Tutor(Scott): The first sketch have the problem with the closure. the extra part come out from the cap will not good for standing on sales shelf. The mechanism need more development. Peer feedback: (Ning Sun,Lee Chuming, Aki) the idea of honey package is good.the shape could be more organic. could do more research on existing product to find the problem and solution For next week, I need to do more research on honey package and understand the mechanism of dispensers.

accessible package

Tutor's(Scott) feedback:need to make the package easier to open and have child-resist system as well. do more research and have some more idea beyond the exist package. Peers'(Li Chuming & Wei Qianwen) feedback:medicine pills package is fine and need to think about the way how to make the shape looks resonable and consider the sales environment requirement. Learning from other tutor(Mar): for arthritis person, the package should aviold the twist action. week2 plan:focus on one product package and do more research on exist product. find out earier way for opening and have child-resist function at the same time.
