Rationale

This concept is a rainwater collector and storage which inspired by heliconia flower. These flowers are produced on long, erect or drooping panicles, and consist of brightly colored waxy bracts, with small true flowers peeping out from the bracts. Heliconia is very drought intolerant, so its structure and form help it to collect more water. For the bracts, they grow one opposite to another so they can collector water in different directions while the long erect shape is particular helpful too. For this design, it copies the structure and form from heliconia flower. There is a main watering can which holds a few flower shape parts that help to collect water and can store a few water as well. For these parts, they can insert into each other. So users can decide how many parts they need and how to assemble them. Also they can be collected one in one in order to save space when not being used. This collector can be in different sizes. For apartment, it can be located at the corner of the balcony while for house, there could be a few in the garden. AS users can decide how many parts they want to put on the can, so it is flexible to decide how much water we want to store. For the material being used, it is decided to be recycled plastic because it is easy in contour machining and the plastic can be recycled used. For now, it is necessary for everyone to save water due to the environment situation. This rainwater collector help users to collect rainwater and we can use the water for gardening or other activities which do not required drinkable water.

new size modle

height 540mm width and depth 400mm

mock up

The mock-up is trying to find out a suitable size for the true product. For this modle, it's about 36cm height and 26cm width and depth. For this size, it looks a little small in a big balcony while does not take too much space.
And the water it collects wont too much, might be just affordable for watering 4-5 regular size plants.

RESEARCH FOR RAINWATER COLLECTOR

The lack of safe and clean water is one of vital problems faced by many people who live in developing countries. ZeusHydration Water Collector has been designed to provide solution to the problem that causes hunger, disease and poverty. It’s a device that absorbs water from different sources and filters it to potable water. There are different ways for ZeusHydration to collect water, one of them is collecting rainwater which is a common practice among people who live in rural areas. Inside this device, there’s a sponge element that acts as a micro-filter. When the sponge is exposed to water sources, it promptly soaks up any water and moisture. When compressed, the sponge will release clean and safe water.

Designer : Kwan Ken Yong
Another way for ZeusHydration water collector to get some water is from the ground from its surrounding, aside from rainwater which enters through its cover, especially after a shower of rain. In fact, this device is able to absorb and filter water from muddy pools.

If you're into Art, Futuristic Architecture and Technology, it is highly recommended that you attend classes & seminars to learn new things, because there is an unlimited abundance of knowledge that you can claim.

WEEK 3 NEW CONCEPT

Last week i choose to focus on developing the concept on segment fruit like orange. After some research i found it is not suitable for this project. So i come out another concept inspired by australian plant which has special form and structure for collecting rain water.
The petals grow into long-deep form which is easy to get more rain. And they are connected in a special structure whicn allow the plant to collect more water from different angle or direction. So following these facter,my concept is developed into a rainwater collector.

It also need more development on the form to make it not like the real plant so much. i think i just need the fuction and structure of it .

Video reflection:an inconvenient truth

An Inconvenient Truth is a 2006 documentary film directed by Davis Guggenheim about former United States Vice President Al Gore's campaign to educate citizens about global warming via a comprehensive slide show that, by his own estimate made in the film, he has given more than a thousand times.
One important point in this film is awareness. Through the boiling frog example, Al Gore playfully explains how humanity can easily be oblivious to dangers around us due to a limited perspective. In this playful illustration, the cartoon frog sits in a container of water which is
slowly heating up. Eventually the water is boiling, but the frog dies before it realized the danger. On the other hand, if the frog were to be in comfortable water, then jump into dangerously hot water, the frog would realize the danger and jump out. Gore relates this to our perspective of the gradually declining state of our environment. If we could step back and gain a broader perspective by looking at research and records of the past, we can see a clearer picture of humanity’s effect on nature.
Al Gore's concerns about our planet undoubtedly raised an immediate action from different parts of the world. World leaders as well as concern citizens should continue the act of humbleness towards our planet even from a simple use of recycling bins to promotion of paper bags instead of plastics.
This is a suitable film for designers, because it addresses the important issue of environmental responsibility. Actually, industrial designers would be leaders in bringing nature back into harmony by prioritizing sustainability in their design. Al Gore’s film brings up several important issues, and designers need to be aware of their impact on the earth. Moreover, industrial designers should continue to gain knowledge on environmental issues and take an active role in improving the relationship between humanity and the rest of nature.
