Donald A. Norman is a professor of cognitive science at University of California, San Diego and a Professor of Computer Science at Northwestern University. In this video, Don Norman gave out a concept which is emotional design which could be explained as designers now are able to change to foucus on creating products which truly fit people with fun instead of just functional.
Firstly, as Don Norman said the fact is we “try to understand beauty” whether it works or it doesn’t. To simply put it, it is within our human nature to be curious as we try to learn, grasp and value things. The use of visceral, behaviour and reflective emotions allows users to interact and in turn have a bit of fun. As Don Norman puts it “pleasant things work better”
In the video, Don Norman concluded three emotion levels which explains how users reflect their emotion on products. And for designers, it is useful to start designing something fun with thinking of users' emotional reflection in these three levels which are visceral, behaviour and reflective.
VISCERAL ,this is the level that is biologically built into our brain , we like bright colours but dislike bitter tastes . we respond positively to things that engage us / make us happy as people . this is displayed in design by the use of type fonts or colours Incorporated to name. Like the water bottle, after drinking up the water people still want to keep that because they think the bottle is not just for water, it is beautiful and it could be used in other ways
BEHAVIOURAL,this is the feelings and pleasure that you get from experience like a ride in a fast and functional car so that you can have a feel that you can control the environment which can fit your desire for satisfaction by physical experience.
REFLECTIVE this is a voice in your head that tells you if something is good or bad , you think about image and your place in society .maybe the product is not functional but you would like to buy it because you reflect the feeling that you like it and the feeling worth your money.
Finally, it is useful for us, designers, to learn and understand these concepts. Using emotional design allows our product to have not only a better interaction but also an emotional and enjoyable experience aswell. It compels you to rethink your approach to design and create a more new and exciting product.
